🤳 Streamer
Popular Streamer IShowSpeed visited Tallinn on Tuesday as part of his European tour, with Visit Estonia spending €30,000 to organize the trip. The costs covered transport via private plane (shared with Latvian and Lithuanian tourism organizations) and security for the influencer, who has over 79 million followers across social media platforms. The visit included meeting Prime Minister Kristen Michal, experiencing Estonian technology through a Starship robot food delivery, and activities like sauna and drifting. Click here to learn more
🌹 Botanic Garden
Tallinn Botanic Garden will celebrate Rose Days on July 19-20 in its newly renovated rose garden, featuring over 700 rose cultivars from around the world. The event includes guided tours, a consultation corner, and plant sales. The rose garden, one of the oldest collections at the botanic garden dating to 1962, underwent major renovation starting in May 2022. The project included pond cleaning, retaining wall restoration, soil replacement, new irrigation and lighting systems, and a new pavilion. The garden showcases varieties from Germany, France, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, and Japan, including classics like 'Baccara' and 'Gloria Dei' alongside modern varieties and Estonian cultivars such as 'Mõrsjaroos' and 'Lumivalgeke.' 📈 Statistics
Statistics Estonia has discovered significant errors in price data compilation that have overestimated inflation and underestimated economic growth. Prime Minister Kristen Michal revealed that electricity prices have been miscalculated. Finance Minister Jürgen Ligi noted additional issues with food price measurements, and problems with home acquisition costs that appear "implausibly high" compared to Lithuania and Poland. Statistics Estonia is developing a new methodology expected to be implemented next year. Click here to learn more
🚨 Siren
The Estonian Ministry of the Interior will test new emergency alert technology called "pocket siren" on Wednesday, July 16, in Tallinn, Pärnu, and Rakvere. The system alerts mobile users about major threats using their phones' sound, light, and vibration features, even when mobile networks are down or phones are on silent mode. Based on 5G broadcast technology, the system can send warnings with satellite coordinate precision through special transmitters installed on tall masts. Click here to learn more
🦙 Llama
Estonian farmers are turning to llamas as an innovative solution to protect their sheep from increasing wolf attacks. The South American animals offer several advantages over traditional guard dogs: they graze alongside sheep without requiring separate feeding, use their size and strong front legs to ward off predators, and pose no threat to humans. Mirjam Pikkmets from Aaduni farm in Pärnu County has successfully used four llamas for two years without losing a single sheep to predators. The llamas change behavior when sensing wolves, emitting an odor and patrolling the fence line, which disrupts predators' hunting patterns. Click here to learn more
🌳 Forest
Estonia has launched "Kaitstud Mets" (Protected Forest), a groundbreaking initiative that creates a real-time "digital twin" of its forests using AI, drones, and IoT sensors. The pilot program covers 50,000 hectares in Lahemaa National Park, aiming to revolutionize forest management from reactive to predictive conservation. The system combines thousands of IoT sensors monitoring soil moisture, temperature, and acoustic signatures; autonomous drones with multispectral cameras for aerial surveillance; and AI-powered analytics to identify patterns and predict risks. 🚝 Train
The new railway connection linking Tallinn, Tartu, Riga, and Vilnius launched in January has surpassed ridership expectations, with bus ticket sales on the same route dropping by over 25 percent. The nearly 10-hour journey was introduced to strengthen connections between Baltic capitals while awaiting completion of the Rail Baltic project. Train tickets from Tallinn to Vilnius cost €39, comparable to bus prices, though buses are about an hour faster than the train service. Click here to learn more
